Jesse Littlebird’s painting reimagines Edward Curtis’s iconic photograph of a horse rider with a child, drawing from both Curtis’s historical documentation and his own personal experience. Curtis, known for capturing Indigenous life at a time of cultural upheaval, immortalized moments of deep connection between parent and child. Littlebird, however, brings a contemporary twist, inspired by Fritz Scholder and TC Cannon’s bold, expressive styles. The rider and horse are infused with vibrant color and energy. For Littlebird, this piece is also deeply personal—he recalls his father carrying him in a backpack on horseback as a child, connecting the past with his own legacy.
